mike's patch

The local environment has become a constant source of Mike’s inspiration. The coastline of North Devon and the rural landscape, with its hedgerows and lanes, are a stimulus for his art with such features as wooded streams and field hedgerows with majestic oak trees.

OPen STudios

For many years Mike has been a participant in Art Trek, which is a North Devon Open Studio event spread over two or three weekends generally in September. Mike is a member of North Devon Arts and the Westward Ho! & Bideford Art Society with whom he regularly exhibits.

art practice

Mike’s work is mainly landscapes and seascapes in acrylic on canvas or prepared board. Drawing has always been a major part of his art practice. Sketchbooks and works on paper are generally a preparation to more accomplished works on canvas or board.

Artist Statement

I have spent most of my working life in the meat and livestock industry mainly in the North and West Devon area. As an artist I feel I draw my inspiration from my surroundings. My work has evolved from the North Devon landscape – an interpretation of my experiences and journeys. I do not have the facility to absorb images and experiences without the process of drawing, which has become an important part of my art practice. I have a need to paint and draw as a means to express myself.

In 1994 I embarked on an adult art and design course at the North Devon College which led to a part-time degree course in Fine Art at the University of Plymouth. In 2001 I completed the degree course and achieved a 2:1 in Fine Art. I have had work purchased by the University of Plymouth. In May 2010 the ‘Artists and Illustrators’ magazine published some of my work in a feature exploring a contemporary approach to the Great British landscape.

Drawing and painting isn’t about confirming what you think is there nor is it simply to make a recording of what is there – it goes deeper than that. The painting or drawing is about the landscape, the texture of nature, the reflective quality of light and the physicality of painting and drawing. The personal mark and hopefully the painting or drawing is independent of the landscape and should have a life of its own. I try, through my art, to make something that is exciting and interesting that might convey something to someone else.
